Evaluation

After completing my advanced media portfolio I have created various tasks while using and developing my skills of certain desktop publishing software's in due course.During the 14week production line, the programmes I used varied in user skill ability considerably with easy programmes such as Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel to more complex software's that require a depth understanding to receive some good products on the likes of Adobe InDesign and and Photoshop elements.

Throughout the coursework many challenges arose that would have to be dealt with to complete the coursework such as what programme to use to create the website. At first I set of to Dreamweaver but due to the complexity and time factor and chose an alternative method of using Wix.com, a free online page in which you can create websites. If I used Dreamweaver I would have to create the page from scratch, in addition to that I would have to make sure that all forms of media(pictures, videos, buttons etc...) was in the correct folders or it would not work. I found wix rather quick and convenient to anyone in particular an A Level media student, this was because it already has a set of buttons, animations and effects that are ready to be used.

Through out my coursework I have tried to challenge as many codes and conventions as possible, however it is important in the way which I challenge it as it may make the product look like something I am not trying to produce. In my ancillary task of the web page, one way in which I challenged the convention was by adding a reflection however, unlike most reflections mine is directly below where as most are reflected to the bottom of the page.

The production of this coursework shows one key media term, synergy. This is relevant where I have included the newspapers website address on the print product, this lets customers know that the newspaper have a website, and that they can get up to date news coverage 24/7. In addition to that the other ancillary tasks of the poster incorporates both the website and the print product, this lets people know about the two products by including the web address, newspaper name and the company slogan. In many ways this is effective as it allows the users to know all kinds of media platforms that 'Harrow Weekly' is accessible from.

One new media form i used in the production of my coursework was the integration of a video onto my website. This turned out o be useful as it not only showed that i was able to include videos on to my website but it also creates interactivity with the user, it allows the user to watch the video and may allow them to get a personal experience of the event to an extent. In addition to that the adding of a customer survey form to receive feedback on my websites also allows the user to interact with the creator to further enhance their personal experience.
Another way in which it helped was by representation of my questionnaire analysis. New media helped in several different ways firstly, following the feedback of my questionnaire it allowed represent the data in graphical forms such as graphs and charts. This allowed for a greater understanding of the responses. In addition to that when putting the graphs with analysis on to my blog i created it in using  PowerPoint slide, this enables anyone looking at my blog to view all the work in one piece.
In addition to that, upon creating my poster for my newspaper I researched some previously made posters, I showed these posters i used on a slide show. While the posters was inspiring some of the posters would need so expertise in creating posters.

To obtain audience feedback I asked four people from each age group category to get a fair understanding. once i received my feedback i learned that more of the older population consumed a newspaper more often then the younger generation, this may be because they may not necessarily new media literate and are more accustomed to reading newspapers. I also learnt that while the old generation was more likely to pick up a newspaper and read, majority of the younger generation was more likely to go onto the Internet and read articles online. However upon comparing my primary research to secondary by Harrow's current leading newspaper Harrow Observer, i learned that more people of middle age picked up the local newspaper.

Poster Final Draft

After receiving feedback from my original poster I made a complete renovation of the whole poster design. The original poster was too dark and it didn't have much of a community feel to it, therefore I got pictures of stations which Harrow Weekly covered. Secondly this poster enhances the corporate identity of Harrow Weekly as it uses the same fonts and colours.

Third Draft of Local Newspaper Front Page

This is the latest design for my front cover of my local newspaper. After recieving some feedback from the last front cover, I realised some changes needed to be made. Firstly I found that there was too many white spaces, therefore I changed the whole design, to make the paper look more fuller. In addition to that I created a house style, font and colour to create a brand recognition.
While this is not the finished the product it is improved from last time. I still need to add, another story at the bottom and 2 more advertisements, by doing this it will make the final product look similar to the original sketch.

Second draft of my poster

This is my second draft of my poser for my newspaper. As all posters do, i have kept the name of my newspaper and corperative colours so it is easy for the audience to recognise. In addition to company corperation I added the company's online version for the newspaper as well as the compnay's line "your best way to keep up with local news".
I added some features such as a motion blur behind the two words "Harrow" and "Weekly" to help the newspapers title to stand out from the rest of the poster.
I made some changes to the original poster as it looked empty and plain.

Harrow Observer textual analysis

The Harrow Observer is the leading local newspaper for the town of Harrow. It is published every Thursday for a price of either 50p or 60p. The paper locals to cover areas such as Wembley, Kenton, Stanmore, Willesden, Harrow-on-the-Hill, Rayners Lane, Pinner and Hatch end. Trinity Mirror Southern is the company that owns and publishes Harrow observer. They publish a vast amount of paid-for and free newspapers & websites in London, Surrey and Buckinghamshire.
As expected the newspaper follows the general codes and conventions a newspaper would be expected to follow, however unlike the general assumption of local newspapers this paper has a vast variety of colours that contribute to making the layout of the paper stand out from others.
The newspaper keeps to a specific format that group all the key details together. The main title, as usually is placed at the top of the page, they use this opportunity to promote the newspapers website (www.harrowobserver.co.uk) by situating it just above the title in a bold font. It also shows the areas it covers. Below that you have the date of which it was published and the price, but most importantly it gives the production team a change to put in their slogan or catchphrase. All of these things together, but mainly the inclusion of the website shows synergy between print and a digital form of product.
From a first look at the paper you would be easily thought that the house colour of the newspaper is purple. If this is so it is important the company follows this house colour of purple throughout all pieces of their work primarily so that it is easy for consumer recognition.
The format of the main story has a four column rule, and this can be easily seen as none of the columns appear to larger than the other and the picture fits in nicely to the look of the picture. The nature of the story is somewhat a controversial one as “Doctors criticise polyclinic plans” is the title, this title creates numerous emotions as it can bring the community together, negativity and opposition to building the polyclinic. In addition to that just below that you have a sub-heading of “Opponents say they would not help residents in east harrow”, this may show a sense of division between certain sections of harrow.
One flaw that can be said of the newspaper is the over mention of the website. The website address has been published 3 times on the front page.
There is a charitable public notice above the main headline stating “Help our Keira: Family’s £50,000 appeal so their girl can walk p3 (page 3)”. This has a purple background around the text making it more distinctive and allows the community who read the paper to interact with that plea for help.

Newspaper Posters

With the use of the newspaper posters in the slideshow, it helped me to make a newspaper poster myself. I decided to use previous designs of newspaper posters as posters for newspaper are not that widely seen or noticed by the public. Due to that key factor I believe the aid of previously produced newspaper posters will leave me in a steady stance for me to produce my own.

Textual Analysis of Watford Observer (Local Newspaper)

The Watford Observer has a yellow strapline just below the title, the use of the yellow is useful as its colour makes it stand out from the rest of the page. In addition to that that strapline contains relevant information such as the date in which the paper was issued, price and the papers website, this is useful as it’s all grouped and the reader doesn’t have to look elsewhere for that kind of information.
The yellow colour of the strap line, can be called useful in away as in can attract the readers attention. This is because the strap includes the date of which the newspaper is published, the newspapers website and the price of the newspaper. By putting all of these in the yellow strap it means that it can group all the key information in one line.
All the stories with a suitable amount of writing on seem to have a negative coverage. The small story at the bottom of the page is about a suicide inquest where, the person pictured killed himself. This does support the claim the negative representations in the media to create some form of an eye attraction to the audience as they wish to find out what happened. As well as that, the caption underneath the picture is about a dog that was attacked by another dog, and was subsequently put down. While this story does show negative representations it also aims to create some form of sympathy for dog owners, as this can happen to any dog owner, it also raises the awareness the dog owners should bring up their dogs in the correct manner so they don’t attack other dogs maliciously.
As well as that  the use of negative words such as ‘Murder trial’ draws the attention of the reader as even though the audience would much rather read positive and encouraging stories of the community, bad news is usually much more popular to read.  In addition to that at the bottom of the page there is another negative story of murder/suicide, this in addition to the main story backs up Galtung & Ruge’s news value theory that negative news receives more coverage then good news.
On the other hand however, the paper does try to bring a sense of togetherness and a community with the small of the two girls together as they prepare for their first day back at school after the summer holidays. This creates a feel good factor about the community. In addition to that point at the bottom of the page you have a promotion from the local MP in Watford, this too does create a sense of togetherness as he is trying to appeal to all ages and genders for one and two he is trying to make it seem as if the local community can trust him with any worries and concerns they may have.
The picture of the dog that was mauled by another dog does spoil the layout of the front cover. This shows a big difference between local and national newspapers as national papers would make the picture fit the layout of the page, where as in this specific news paper the inclusion of the picture ruins the rule of third thus making the columns uneven.
In addition to the point mentioned above about the layout, if you look at the picture of the suicide inquest, there has been some poor Photoshop editing. If you look closely enough at the picture you can see they have slight cut out some of his head too. This may be due to numerous of factors such as, the Watford Observer and local newspapers are unlikely to have as much time and money to put into projects, meaning that the few members they have may have to spread their time appropriately and therefore can’t spend as much time on some news stories as they would wish to.

My Proposal

Dear Jeff
For my production of my A2 Media Studies coursework I will have to complete a minimum of a 3 page website, 3 page website and a poster for my newspaper. In addition to that I must have at least 3 self-taken pictures in my newspaper and on my newspaper. Obviously just providing the production task alone will not be adequate, therefore I will have to do numerous planning and evaluation tasks to complement it.
Firstly I will draw up a production schedule, this will aid me in completing all my tasks on time and finishing my coursework ahead of the deadline, it will also enable to me to receive feedback and make any amendments needed to improve the coursework.
After that I will buy two different local newspapers and textually analyse them. I will also buy a national tabloid newspaper and analyse that, after that I will look at the differences in how news in represented in the two different types of newspapers and what kind of storied, layout and genres that are covered. I will also look for potential newspaper stories in line with this task, when the stories have been found I will take appropriate pictures myself that co-ordinate with the story lines.
To make sure that I have the correct equipment i must make sure that my camera or USB pen is compatible with not only my personal computer but also with the college computers, if this is done properly then it could put me behind my production schedule. I will also have to check the pictures are in the right format to be used and manipulated on both computers and in addition to that i must make sure that I have the same software at home and school.
I will also make a questionnaire consisting of around 15 questions to get a general understanding to see if the local community buy their local newspaper and read it. It will contain questions centrally based around local newspapers and if they prefer an online version. I also aim to find out what new areas they would like to see. After I have received the feedback I will analyse the answers using different types of graphs and charts and then explain my findings
The completion of the planning process will be followed by the start of the production process for my web page, newspaper and production. For my webpage I will use Dreamweaver, this because personally, I find it the easiest and most straightforward production programme over other programmes. It also allows me to manipulate the design of other websites by copying the html into Dreamweaver and then adding my touches to it. In line with the production of my webpage production process I will make a site map so you’re clearly able to see what pages link to what.
In addition to that I will make a newspaper. Using the research gathered from the earlier newspaper analysis tasks I will try to make my newspaper fit the traditional codes and conventions of a typical local newspaper, however some aspects will be challenged. I will look to have a minimum of 3 pages for my newspaper containing at least 3 pictures taken by myself on recent local newspapers.  It will consist of a front page showing the main story with some advertisement and another story starter. On the inside there will be a page containing general information and a few small pictures of editors and journalists ion the company. Lastly I will have a sports page summing up local sports news as well as the future visit of American football to Wembley.
The last part of the production tasks will involve me making a poster for the newspaper advertising it to the local population. As it is rare for newspapers to have posters I will look for inspiration from the few posters that have been made for national newspapers. I will try to incorporate the newspapers logo, an eye catching and unique design as well as the newspapers logo.
For the final part of the coursework I will complete the evaluation tasks, this part will consist of two parts. Firstly I will make a final questionnaire to receive a final opinion of how users rated the final production pieces. The questionnaire will be mainly centred on whether the website was user friendly for all ages, its eye appeal and ability to attract attention. If any changes need to be made following the data response from the audience it will be able to be made due to early handing in, and I will state why i made the changes too.
Lastly I will provide an in detailed evaluation, this will be related to all the questions and tasks I was asked to complete in the coursework introduction. I will always use SWOT analysis in the evaluation. This is where I would assess my strengths and weaknesses as well as commenting on what I could of done better and what skills I thought I gained. I will state if any of the tasks challenged me, and how I overcame those challenges whether it be by help or finding an alternative method. In addition to that I will also mention if I was able to keep up to date with my production schedule and if not, why.

Production Schedule

With the use of this production schedule it will provide an aid to me completing my coursework on time. it will allow me to maybe  even give in tasks earlier, with enough time to make last minute amendments
